Black Desert Ain’t Yer Normal MMO
Far from it! From the gear to the combat system to the mechanics, it’s all a whole world of difference from the average MMO on the market today. In nearly all MMO’s (I only say ‘nearly all’ because I haven’t played them all) your gear has some sort of restriction. Most of the time this is a certain level you need to be to equip/use the weapon or armor or whatever it is. BDO has no level restrictions on gear. What does this mean? Leveling alts becomes superfast and supereasy! You can simply drop your armor/accessories into the Olvia warehouse on your main, and take them out when you create a new alt. Weapons are class restricted, so unless you are starting an alt that can use the same weapon as your main, you may want to pick up an Ultimate Styd weapon for the new class. The only downside in BDO is that there isn’t much variance with armor or how it looks. The upside is that you can dye EVERYTHING. Well, everything that is armor or weapons, anyway. With the Value Pack, you also have unlimited use of Merv’s Palette in the dye shop, which is essentially pretty much every color. Well, enough about this. Let’s get to the upgrading!
Transfusion is available through your Black Spirit screen. This is where you add crystals to your gear. Crystals vary in purpose, from the simple +1 to attack speed or casting speed to dual-purpose crystals like +1 to both critical hit rate level and attack speed. Accuracy is great if you are lower level and have issues hitting the mobs you are killing. Since you should be out as far as you can be, where mobs are dark red or even purple, this will be important for you when leveling your alts.
This is the most important upgrade to your gear. The old limit was a cap of +15, that cap has been moved now to +20. At level 27 the Black Spirit will give you a quest series that walks you through this feature. Black Stones (Armor/Weapon) are found on any monsters level 25 and higher. Armor up to +5 is guaranted, and weapons to +7 will not fail. Once you go for +6 armor or +8 weapons, you have a chance to fail the upgrade. This will generate a fail stack. You can also view your failstack count on the enhancement screen. It is the +3 in the screenshot above. We’ll discuss failstacks later.
Accessories can also be enhanced, but they do not use stones. You need another item of the same type you are trying to upgrade. So, to upgrade a Bares Ring, you need to use other Bares Rings to upgrade them. Accessories have an extremely high rate of failure, and very low chance of successfully upgrading. They are also capped at +5, which is hard enough to do that you may go your entire life in BDO without making one. If you fail an upgrade, both items disappear.
Thankfully, weapons and armor do not have this failure penalty. They simply lose maximum durability. From +8 to +15, you will lose 5 max durability per failure. +16 to +20 you will lose 10. There is a “Safe Enchant” feature that uses multiple stones and lowers the max durability by a set amount, those requirements are in the fail stacks chart. So your max durability dropped, how do you get it back to 100? First, you need the same item. No, it doesn’t have to match the enchant level, thankfully! So you can use a normal Yuria Shortsword to repair max durability on your Yuria Shortsword +12. Each one will repair 10 max durability. If you are at 70 max durability, you’ll need 3 to recover back to 100. Then you just go to a friendly local blacksmith or armor vendor and use the Repair menu. The exception to this is Liverto, Kzarka, and Boss armor. You definitely do not want to use the same item to repair those, even though you can. You’ll want to use a Memory Fragment to repair max durability on those types of items. On boss armor, these will repair 1 max durability each. On Liverto weapons, it will repair 2. I’m not sure about Kzarka weapons, as I do not have one. You can buy memory fragments off the marketplace or farm them. Farming is much better, as they are currently running ~750k each on the market. To farm them, you’ll want to hang onto any Ancient Relic Crystal Shard you pick up while grinding, farming, fishing, etc. Once you have 5 of them, you can arrange them in a + pattern and click the + symbol on the top one to get an Ancient Relic Crystal Summon Scroll. You can right click the scroll and it will mark your path to where you need to use it, just east of Behr. There are 3 waves of monsters with one boss each. You’ll end up with 3 boss bundles and some memory fragments. You can then head to your favorite blacksmith/armor vendor and repair your gear a bit!
Hit +15 before you do this! Repairing max durability costs go up. You start with the common green gear, then you can upgrade it to the rarer blue, or even the ultimate yellow. You’ll get an extra stat at blue or yellow. Quality upgrades were made a lot easier. You used to have to find the right forge and spend contribution to purchase it, then have a worker do the task. Now you just pop open your Black Spirit screen, click on Item Reform, throw in the armor or weapon you want to upgrade, then throw the appropriate stone in. You can use any of the stones to upgrade any piece of gear, regardless of the gears current quality-
|Grade 1 Armor Reform Stone||Grade 1 Weapon Reform Stone|
|Grade 2 Armor Reform Stone||Grade 2 Weapon Reform Stone|
|Grade 3 Armor Reform Stone||Grade 3 Weapon Reform Stone|
|Ultimate Armor Reform Stone||Ultimate Weapon Reform Stone|
Ultimate stones automatically upgrade your piece to yellow. The others have chances to fail or upgrade.
What are they? They give you a marginal improvement on your chance to succeed in an upgrade. Each enchantment level has a cap on how many failstacks will apply to your attempt. You will lose all failstacks if you succeed, so it’s best to use them wisely. If you’re at the cap on failstacks for the piece of gear you were trying to upgrade, but you have another that could use that extra stack or two, throw it in and give it a shot! Here are some charts with percentages and max stacks and even the safe enchant requirements I mentioned earlier.
